- Formula used
result = amount ÷ rate(from) × rate(to)- Example

Currency converter
Pick the amount, the currency you are converting from and the one you want. The exchange rate updates daily and you can see which one was applied, so you can check the number rather than take it on trust.
The rate used here is the market reference rate. Your bank or bureau de change will apply its own, almost always worse.
How it works
The amount is first converted into the reference currency and from there into the target currency. It is the route any exchange table follows, and it avoids maintaining a separate rate for every possible pair.
Formula
result = amount ÷ rate(from) × rate(to)
applied rate = rate(to) ÷ rate(from)
Worked example
100 euros into pounds, with the euro at 0.86 pounds:
100 × 0.86 = 86 pounds
The inverse rate tells you what one pound is worth: 1 ÷ 0.86 = 1.16 euros.
Explanation
The rate you see here is not the one you will be given
This calculator uses the market reference rate, the one published as the quotation. No bank or bureau de change gives you that: they all apply a spread, which is where their margin comes from. On a small transaction the difference can exceed three per cent, and at an airport counter it can pass ten.
Use it to know what you ought to receive, then compare with what you are offered. That subtraction is what the service is costing you.
Why it updates daily rather than by the second
The currency market quotes continuously, but for everyday sums a daily rate is plenty. We store the table once a day on the server and serve it from there: the tool stays equally fast for everyone, it does not depend on an outside service being up at that moment, and no third party learns what you looked up.
The date of the last update always appears next to the result. Before moving a significant sum, check with your bank.
Currencies with very large figures
Some currencies run to thousands per euro. With the Paraguayan guaraní or the Colombian peso you will see long figures, and there the inverse rate is usually easier to hold in your head.
Pegged currencies
The Panamanian balboa is pegged one to one with the dollar and dollar notes circulate in the country. Other currencies hold fixed pegs or official bands that can drift from the parallel market. Where exchange controls apply, the official and the real rate do not match.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my bank give me less?
Because you see the market reference rate here and the bank applies a spread on top. That difference is its fee, whatever it is called.
How often are rates updated?
Once a day. The exact date of the last update appears next to the result.
Can I use this for a tax return?
No. Tax authorities set their own official rates for each date. Check the one your authority publishes.
