GPA calculator

GPA is the average requested by US universities and exchange programmes. It is expressed on a 0 to 4 scale and weights each course by its credits.

It is essential for graduate applications and international scholarships.

How it works

Each grade is converted to points on the 4.0 scale and multiplied by the course credits. The sum of those quality points is divided by the total credits.

Formula

GPA = Σ (points × credits) / Σ credits

A = 4.0 · A− = 3.7 · B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B− = 2.7
C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · D = 1.0 · F = 0

Worked example

Grades 4 · 3.7 · 3 · 3.3 with credits 3 · 4 · 3 · 2:

Points: 12 + 14.8 + 9 + 6.6 = 42.4
Credits: 12
GPA: 42.4 / 12 = 3.533

Explanation

The 4.0 scale is not a simple proportion

Converting an 8 out of 10 to the American scale is not multiplying by 0.4. Each university publishes its own equivalence table, and conversion goes through the letters: an A is worth 4 points, a B three, a C two. What varies between countries is which numeric mark corresponds to each letter, and the differences there are substantial.

Weighted and unweighted

Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0. Weighted GPA gives more credit to advanced courses, which is why American high schools show averages above 4.0 that puzzle anyone unfamiliar with the system. When comparing two records, you need to know which is in use.

What universities also look at

A high GPA in an undemanding programme counts for less than a slightly lower one in a rigorous course. Admissions committees look at the rigour of the curriculum, the trend across years and the specific subjects related to what you are applying for.

Official evaluations

For a formal application, conversion is done by an accredited credential evaluation agency, not a calculator. This calculation is for orientation before starting the process.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my grades to the 4.0 scale?

Every country has its own conversion table. As a rough guide, 90-100% maps to 4.0 and a bare pass to 1.0-2.0.

What counts as a good GPA?

3.5 or above is generally considered excellent, and 3.0 is the usual minimum for many graduate programmes.

Can a GPA exceed 4.0?

In the weighted system yes, because advanced courses add extra points. In the unweighted system, 4.0 is the maximum.

Is this conversion valid for an official application?

It serves as guidance. Formal processes require evaluation by an accredited credential agency.
