In short

What it calculates
Turn your monthly salary into the real value of every hour you work.
Formula used
Hours per month = weekly hours × weeks per month
Example
£2,000 a month working 40 hours a week:

Hourly rate calculator

Knowing what your hour is worth changes a lot of decisions: whether overtime pays off, whether a long commute is worth it, whether to take on a side job. The calculation uses 4.33 weeks per month, the real yearly average.

How it works

Weekly hours are multiplied by the weeks in a month to get monthly hours, and the salary is divided by that figure. The result is gross, before contributions and taxes.

Formula

Hours per month = weekly hours × weeks per month

Hourly rate = monthly salary / hours per month

Annual salary = monthly salary × 12

Worked example

£2,000 a month working 40 hours a week:

Hours per month: 40 × 4.33 = 173.2
Hourly rate: 2,000 / 173.2 = £11.55
Annual: £24,000

Explanation

The real cost of an hour is more than the wage

If you are comparing offers, the contract's hourly rate does not tell the whole story. Commuting, unpaid lunch breaks and flexibility all change the result. An offer paying ten per cent more but demanding an extra hour of travel a day can work out worse per effective hour of your life.

How many hours are in a working year

A forty-hour week gives 2,080 hours a year before deducting holidays and public holidays. With thirty calendar days of leave and a dozen public holidays, the real figure drops to around 1,760. Dividing an annual salary by 2,080 or by 1,760 changes the answer by almost twenty per cent.

Extra monthly payments

In countries where salary is split into fourteen payments, dividing by twelve alone inflates the monthly figure. To work out an hourly value, always start from the annual total rather than what lands in the bank each month.

From freelance to employed

A freelancer comparing their rate with a salary should add to the salary the employer's social contributions, paid holidays and unemployment protection, all of which they cover themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Why 4.33 weeks and not 4?

Because the year has 52 weeks and 12 months: 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33. Using 4 overstates your hourly rate by 8%.

Is it gross or net?

Gross. Deductions depend on your country and personal situation, so they are not applied automatically.

How many hours does a full-time employee work a year?

Around 1,760 after deducting leave and public holidays, against the theoretical 2,080 of forty hours over fifty-two weeks.

How do I compare a freelance rate with a salary?

By adding to the salary the employer social contributions, paid holidays and unemployment cover that a freelancer pays for themselves.
