In short
- What it calculates
- How often your keyword appears and how much weight it carries.
- Formula used
Density = occurrences × words in the keyword ÷ total words × 100- Example
- An 800-word text where “percentage calculator” appears 8 times:
Keyword density calculator
Keyword density is no longer a ranking factor in itself, but it still helps spot two extremes: a text that never mentions its topic, and one that repeats it until it sounds artificial.
The list of most frequent words is often more revealing still.
How it works
Exact occurrences of the keyword are counted, normalising accents and case, and expressed as a share of the text. The ten most repeated words of four letters or more are also listed.
Formula
Density = occurrences × words in the keyword ÷ total words × 100
Worked example
An 800-word text where “percentage calculator” appears 8 times:
Density: 8 × 2 ÷ 800 × 100 = 2.00%
Explanation
There is no optimal density
It is one of the most persistent myths in search optimisation. There is no magic percentage, and Google has not used word repetition as a direct relevance signal for over a decade. Modern engines understand synonyms, variants and context, so forcing a figure only makes the text worse.
What is penalised is stuffing
Repeating a phrase unnaturally to manipulate rankings is expressly covered as a practice contrary to the guidelines. The line is not a number: it is whether the text sounds forced to a human reader. If it grates when read aloud, there is too much repetition.
So what is measuring for
As a diagnostic, not a target. Seeing a word appear thirty times in a thousand usually reveals thin writing; seeing the main term appear not at all may indicate the page does not make clear what it is about. It is a warning sign at both extremes.
Write for the reader
Covering the topic well, answering the real questions and using the natural vocabulary of the field works better than any density calculation. Synonyms and variants count as much as the exact phrase.
Frequently asked questions
What density is correct?
There is no magic number. Between 0.5% and 2.5% usually reads naturally; above 4% the text starts to sound forced.
Must I repeat the exact keyword?
No. Search engines understand synonyms and variants, and natural writing ranks better than saturated text.
What is the ideal keyword density?
There is none. Google has not used density as a direct signal for over a decade. Writing naturally and covering the topic well works better.
Should I repeat the exact keyword?
It is not necessary. Search engines recognise synonyms and variants, and the natural vocabulary of the topic contributes more than literal repetition.
