How it works
The tip is applied to the total and divided by the number of people. The amount rounded up is also shown, along with how much would be left over.

Explanation
Equal shares or by consumption
Splitting equally is quick and works when everyone has eaten and drunk similarly. As soon as someone does not drink alcohol or has only had a coffee, an equal split stops being fair and it is better to divide by consumption. The polite move is to raise it before ordering, not when the bill arrives.
Tipping varies enormously by country
In the United States fifteen to twenty per cent is expected and forms part of staff wages. Across much of Europe service is included and people round up or leave a small percentage. In Japan leaving a tip can be awkward. It is worth checking before travelling.
Service charge is not the same as a tip
Some restaurants add a service charge to the bill, particularly for large groups. If it appears on the receipt, tipping on top is optional and often unnecessary. It pays to read the breakdown before settling.
The odd cent
Dividing rarely produces an exact figure. The usual approach is to round up and let whoever pays by card absorb the difference, or leave it as part of the tip.
