In short
- What it calculates
- Tip, total and split between diners in a single calculation.
- Formula used
Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100- Example
- A £84.50 bill with a 15% tip between 4 people:
Tip calculator
Work out the tip and split the bill between everyone at the table in one go.
Customary percentages vary a lot: 5–10% is generous in much of Europe, while 15–20% is expected in the United States.
How it works
The tip is a percentage of the bill and is added to the total. The result is then divided by the number of people.
Formula
Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ people
Worked example
A £84.50 bill with a 15% tip between 4 people:
Tip: £12.68
Total: £97.18
Per person: £24.29
Explanation
Before or after tax
In the United States the widespread custom is to calculate the tip on the subtotal before sales tax, although many people use the total for convenience. With an eight per cent tax and a twenty per cent tip, the difference is a couple of dollars on a hundred-dollar bill. Neither approach is wrong.
Why the United States is different
Many states have a reduced minimum wage for tipped workers, on the assumption that tips top up their income. That makes the tip part of the wage rather than a bonus for good service, which is why it is firmly expected and not genuinely optional.
Automatic service charges
For large groups, many restaurants add a fixed percentage to the bill. If it appears on the receipt, there is no need to leave anything on top. It pays to check the breakdown before settling so you do not double up without noticing.
Splitting unevenly
When someone has consumed considerably more, the fair approach is for their share of the tip to be proportional to their consumption, rather than an arithmetic split between diners.
Frequently asked questions
Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
Most people calculate it on the final bill including tax, though in some countries it is based on the pre-tax amount.
What if we want to split unevenly?
Use the split the bill calculator or work out each share separately.
Is the tip calculated on the total including tax?
American custom is to calculate it on the subtotal before tax, although many use the total. The difference is small and both are accepted.
Should I tip if the receipt includes a service charge?
It is not necessary. That charge already fulfils the tip's function, and anything extra is entirely voluntary.
