Volume unit converter

Alongside the metric units it includes Anglo-American kitchen measures, which appear in any translated recipe.

Watch out for the two different gallons: the US one and the British imperial one.

Every unit is referenced to the litre. The value goes to litres and from there to the target unit, using official factor precision.

A cup does not measure the same everywhere

The American cup is 240 millilitres, the metric cup 250 and the old British cup 284. In baking, where proportions matter, that difference ruins a dough. On top of that, cups measure volume while European recipes measure weight: a cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh very different amounts despite occupying the same space.

The pint changes size by country

The British imperial pint is 568 millilitres and the American 473. Almost a hundred millilitres apart, which is exactly what separates a British beer from an American one ordered with the same word. The difference comes from the two incompatible gallons they derive from.

Tablespoons and teaspoons

A tablespoon is 15 millilitres and a teaspoon 5 in almost every system, with the Australian exception where a tablespoon is 20. In recipes with yeast or salt the difference shows.

Volume and capacity

A cubic metre is a thousand litres. A cubic centimetre is exactly a millilitre, an equivalence that is very handy when moving from geometric measurements to kitchen or laboratory ones.
