Week number of the year

Week numbers are the standard reference in logistics, manufacturing and project planning.

The ISO 8601 standard is applied, the one used across Europe and in most management systems.

How it works

Under ISO 8601 the week starts on Monday and week 1 is the one containing the first Thursday of January. That is why early January days can belong to week 52 or 53 of the previous year.

Formula

ISO week: week 1 contains the first Thursday of the year

Day of the year: days since 1 January + 1

Quarter = ⌈month ÷ 3⌉

Worked example

Date: 2026-08-21

ISO week: 34
Day of the year: 233
Quarter: 3
Day: Friday

Explanation

The ISO standard is what businesses use

It defines the week as starting on Monday and week one as the one containing the year's first Thursday, or equivalently the one containing 4 January. It is the criterion used by European planning systems, and the reason 1 January sometimes belongs to week 52 or 53 of the previous year.

The United States counts differently

There it is common for the week to start on Sunday and for week one to be simply the one containing 1 January. Comparing week numbers between a European and an American calendar without noticing produces a full week of offset in planning.

Years with 53 weeks

This happens when the year starts on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year. It occurs roughly every five or six years, and catches out anyone who always plans on 52 weeks: those years carry an extra period that budgets and shift patterns must account for.

Where it is used

In logistics, production and trade, referring to week 34 is more practical than to a date range. Campaigns, shipments and shifts are planned by week number across much of European industry.

Frequently asked questions
