Belgium TVA calculator
In Belgium the indirect tax on consumption is TVA (Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutée / Belasting over de Toegevoegde Waarde), with a standard rate of 21%.
Belgium is bilingual in tax matters too: the same invoice may say TVA or BTW depending on the language. The 6% rate covers food, water, books and medicines, while 12% applies to restaurant services excluding alcohol and to social housing.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Belgium are: standard 21 %, reduced 12 % and reduced 2 6 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 21 % rate:
TVA amount: €210
Final price: €1,210
The other way round, starting from €1,210 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.
Explanation
One country, two names for the same tax
In Wallonia and Brussels you will see TVA; in Flanders, BTW. It is exactly the same tax, and bilingual invoices show both abbreviations. The competent authority is the SPF Finances, also known as FOD Financiën.
Demolition and rebuild at 6%
Belgium applies a reduced 6% rate to the demolition and reconstruction of housing under certain conditions, a measure designed to renew the urban housing stock. Renovation of homes over ten years old also falls under 6%.
The uncommon 12%
It covers restaurant services excluding alcoholic drinks, social housing and some products such as margarine and certain solid fuels. It is one of the least common intermediate rates in Europe.
Advance payments and filing
Businesses file monthly or quarterly. Quarterly filers must make advance payments, and there is a specific additional December payment that catches newcomers by surprise.
Frequently asked questions
Which TVA rates apply in Belgium?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 21 %, reduced 12 % and reduced 2 6 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Belgium legislation; if in doubt, check with el SPF Finances / FOD Financiën.
How do I remove TVA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Are TVA and BTW different taxes?
No. They are the same tax in French and Dutch. A bilingual Belgian invoice normally shows both terms.
Which rate applies to renovation work?
6% on homes over ten years old that meet the conditions, and 21% on new builds.
