Australia GST calculator
In Australia the indirect tax on consumption is GST (Goods and Services Tax), with a standard rate of 10%.
Australia's GST has been 10% since it was introduced in 2000 and has not changed since. Basic food, most medical services and education are GST-free, the equivalent of zero rating. Retail prices are always advertised inclusive of the tax.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Australia are: standard 10 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 10 % rate:
GST amount: $100
Final price: $1,100
The other way round, starting from $1,100 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.
Explanation
A 10% rate unchanged since 2000
Australian GST came into force on 1 July 2000 at 10%, and there it has stayed. It is one of the most stable tax bases in the developed world: neither the rate nor the main categories have moved in over two decades.
GST-free is not the same as input taxed
This is the key distinction in the Australian system. Something GST-free, such as basic food, health and education, carries no tax but the supplier still recovers the GST they paid. Something input taxed, such as financial services and residential rent, also carries no tax but the supplier cannot recover anything. The difference matters enormously to anyone invoicing.
The BAS: the periodic return
The Business Activity Statement is lodged with the ATO, usually each quarter. It brings GST together with other obligations, so it is not a return dedicated to this tax alone.
Registration threshold
Below an annual turnover figure there is no obligation to register, with stricter specific rules for passenger transport.
Frequently asked questions
Which GST rates apply in Australia?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 10 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Australia legislation; if in doubt, check with la Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
How do I remove GST from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
What is the difference between GST-free and input taxed?
Neither charges GST, but a GST-free supplier recovers the GST they paid while an input taxed supplier cannot.
Is food subject to GST in Australia?
Basic supermarket food is GST-free, but prepared food, restaurant meals and many processed products are taxed at 10%.
