Ireland VAT calculator
In Ireland the indirect tax on consumption is VAT (Value Added Tax), with a standard rate of 23%.
Ireland has one of the highest standard rates in the European Union. The 13.5% rate covers construction, fuel and repair services, while 9% is reserved for newspapers and certain services. Ireland's zero rate includes most food and children's clothing.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Ireland are: standard 23 %, reduced 13.5 %, reduced 2 9 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 23 % rate:
VAT amount: €230
Final price: €1,230
The other way round, starting from €1,230 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.
Explanation
Ireland's zero rate is among the most generous
Most food, books, children's clothing and footwear, oral medicines and candles are zero-rated. It is not an exemption: the seller still recovers VAT on purchases, so the deduction chain stays intact.
13.5%, the rate for working with your hands
It covers construction and renovation, plumbing, electrical work, cleaning, hairdressing, domestic fuel and repair services. It is the rate anyone hiring a trade in Ireland runs into.
9% and tourism
It has been applied and withdrawn several times on hospitality and tourism as a stimulus measure, and today applies to newspapers, digital publications and some services. Check the date before applying it to a past invoice.
VAT on digital services
Ireland hosts the European headquarters of many technology companies, so the place-of-supply rules for digital services and the OSS system matter especially to businesses established there.
