In short

What it calculates
Add or remove Germany MwSt at the rates in force.
Formula used
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 19 % rate:

Germany MwSt calculator

In Germany the indirect tax on consumption is MwSt (Mehrwertsteuer, value added tax), with a standard rate of 19%.

Germany has only two rates, which makes invoicing considerably simpler. The 7% rate applies to food, books, newspapers, local transport and cultural admissions. Invoices may show it as MwSt or USt (Umsatzsteuer): they are the same tax.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Germany are: standard 19 % and reduced 7 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 19 % rate:

MwSt amount: €190
Final price: €1,190

The other way round, starting from €1,190 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.

Explanation

Two rates, and that is why it works

Germany resists the temptation to multiply categories. 19% is standard and 7% covers food, books, newspapers, magazines, local passenger transport, museum and theatre admissions, and hotel accommodation. That simplicity avoids the classification disputes that consume time elsewhere.

MwSt or USt: the same tax

Invoices show one abbreviation or the other. Umsatzsteuer is the legal name of the turnover tax; Mehrwertsteuer is the colloquial term that prevailed. Vorsteuer, by contrast, is the input tax a business deducts.

Kleinunternehmerregelung

Small businesses below certain thresholds can opt into a regime that exempts them from charging VAT. The invoice must say so explicitly, and whoever receives it can deduct nothing from it.

Reverse charge in construction

For certain construction services between businesses, the obligation to account for the tax shifts to the recipient. The invoice goes out without VAT and with the corresponding wording.

Frequently asked questions

Which MwSt rates apply in Germany?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 19 % and reduced 7 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Germany legislation; if in doubt, check with the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt).

How do I remove MwSt from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

How often is German VAT filed?

Monthly or quarterly depending on the previous year’s amount, with an annual closing return. New companies usually file monthly in their first years.

Is hotel accommodation taxed at 7%?

The overnight stay is. Breakfast and other services invoiced separately are taxed at 19%.
