the Netherlands BTW calculator
In the Netherlands the indirect tax on consumption is BTW (Belasting over de Toegevoegde Waarde), with a standard rate of 21%.
The Dutch 9% reduced rate covers food, medicines, books, culture and home repair work. The Netherlands also makes frequent use of the reverse charge mechanism in construction and subcontracting.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in the Netherlands are: standard 21 %, reduced 9 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 21 % rate:
BTW amount: €210
Final price: €1,210
The other way round, starting from €1,210 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.
Explanation
A reduced rate that covers a lot
The Dutch 9% is broader than usual: food, water, medicines, books and the press, culture, hospitality, hairdressing, bicycles and repairs to shoes and clothing, plus the labour component of renovation work on homes over two years old.
The KOR scheme for small businesses
The kleineondernemersregeling lets anyone below an annual turnover threshold be exempt from charging btw. In exchange they cannot deduct input tax, and they must stay in the scheme for a minimum period before leaving.
Reverse charge in construction
In subcontracted building work, the obligation to account for the tax shifts to the main contractor. The invoice goes out without btw bearing the words 'btw verlegd', a phrase seen constantly in the sector.
Quarterly filing
Most businesses file every quarter through the Belastingdienst portal, although some are required to file monthly and others fall under an annual regime.
Frequently asked questions
Which BTW rates apply in the Netherlands?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 21 %, reduced 9 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by the Netherlands legislation; if in doubt, check with la Belastingdienst.
How do I remove BTW from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
What does “btw verlegd” mean on an invoice?
That the reverse charge applies: the recipient of the invoice is the one who must account for the tax.
Is the KOR scheme always worthwhile?
No. If you buy a lot or invest heavily, losing the right to deduct input tax can cost more than simply charging VAT.
