In short

What it calculates
Add or remove New Zealand GST at the rates in force.
Formula used
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 15 % rate:

New Zealand GST calculator

In New Zealand the indirect tax on consumption is GST (Goods and Services Tax), with a standard rate of 15%.

New Zealand has one of the cleanest indirect tax systems in the world: 15% applied to almost everything, without the long exception lists that complicate other countries. That broad base is what keeps the rate moderate.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in New Zealand are: standard 15 % and zero-rated 0 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 15 % rate:

GST amount: $150
Final price: $1,150

The other way round, starting from $1,150 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.

Explanation

The cleanest system in the world, and that is not an exaggeration

New Zealand's GST is cited in public finance textbooks as the broadest-based consumption tax in existence. There are virtually no exemptions: food is taxed the same as a television, and there are no reduced rates by category. Economists treat it as the reference model precisely for that reason.

From 10% in 1986 to 15% today

It was introduced in 1986 at 10%, rose to 12.5% shortly afterwards and reached 15% in October 2010, alongside an income tax cut. It has not changed since.

Why there is no reduced rate for food

The official New Zealand position is that exempting food benefits, in absolute terms, those who spend most, and that helping lower-income households is better done through direct transfers. It is a recurring debate that has so far always been settled the same way.

Tax-inclusive prices

Consumer prices are shown with GST included, so what you see is what you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Which GST rates apply in New Zealand?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 15 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by New Zealand legislation; if in doubt, check with Inland Revenue (IRD).

How do I remove GST from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

Is food subject to GST in New Zealand?

Yes. Unlike almost every other country, New Zealand taxes food at the same 15% as everything else, with no reduced rate.

How much tax is in a final price?

At 15%, the tax contained is three twenty-thirds of the total, roughly 13.04%. You get it by dividing by 1.15.
