Singapore GST calculator
In Singapore the indirect tax on consumption is GST (Goods and Services Tax), with a standard rate of 9%.
Singapore raised its GST from 7% to 8% in 2023 and to 9% in 2024, in two steps announced years in advance. Exports and international services are zero-rated, consistent with its role as a regional logistics hub.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Singapore are: standard 9 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 9 % rate:
GST amount: $90
Final price: $1,090
The other way round, starting from $1,090 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.
Explanation
An increase in two steps
Singapore held 7% for over a decade, raised it to 8% on 1 January 2023 and to 9% on 1 January 2024. The increase was announced years in advance and delivered in two stages to cushion the effect on prices. To check an older invoice, look at the date before the amount.
Exempt and zero-rated are not the same
Zero-rated covers exports and international services, and the supplier recovers the tax on their purchases. Exempt covers financial services, the sale and lease of residential property and digital payment tokens, where no recovery is possible.
Tourist refund
The Tourist Refund Scheme lets visitors reclaim the tax on purchases when leaving through Changi Airport, subject to a minimum spend per retailer and an electronic process at the terminals.
Registration threshold
Businesses above a set annual turnover must register with IRAS; below it, registration is voluntary.
Frequently asked questions
Which GST rates apply in Singapore?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 9 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Singapore legislation; if in doubt, check with la Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS).
How do I remove GST from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
When did GST rise to 9%?
On 1 January 2024. During 2023 it was 8%, and until the end of 2022 it stood at 7%.
Can I reclaim GST as a tourist?
Yes, through the Tourist Refund Scheme when departing via the airport, meeting the minimum purchase amount and completing the terminal process.
