India GST calculator
In India the indirect tax on consumption is GST (Goods and Services Tax), with a standard rate of 18%.
In 2017 India merged a tangle of state taxes into a GST with four bands. The 28% band is reserved for luxury goods, cars and tobacco, which may also carry an additional cess. On transactions within a single state the amount is split equally between CGST and SGST.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in India are: standard 18 %, reduced 12 %, reduced 2 5 %, increased 28 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced ₹1,000 before tax, at the standard 18 % rate:
GST amount: ₹180
Final price: ₹1,180
The other way round, starting from ₹1,180 tax included, the base is ₹1,000 again.
Explanation
One tax that replaced dozens
Before 2017 India had a patchwork of state and central levies that made moving goods across state lines both a logistics and a tax problem. GST merged almost all of them into a single tax with four bands: 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.
CGST, SGST and IGST
On a transaction within one state the amount splits equally between the central tax (CGST) and the state tax (SGST): 18% is 9% + 9%. On interstate transactions IGST applies, collected centrally and then apportioned. The invoice reflects that split.
What sits in each band
5% covers basic packaged food, transport and budget accommodation. 12% and 18% carry most goods and services. 28% is reserved for cars, tobacco, sugary drinks and luxury goods, which may also bear an additional levy known as cess.
Composition scheme
Small taxpayers below certain thresholds can opt into a simplified regime with a flat rate on turnover and no input tax credit.
Frequently asked questions
Which GST rates apply in India?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 18 %, reduced 12 %, reduced 2 5 %, increased 28 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by India legislation; if in doubt, check with el GST Council y el Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
How do I remove GST from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
CGST and SGST apply together on transactions within a single state, half each. IGST applies to interstate transactions and to imports.
How often is GST filed?
Monthly under the regular scheme, with separate outward-supply and summary returns. The composition scheme files quarterly.
What is cess?
An extra levy on top of the 28% band for certain goods such as cars, tobacco and aerated drinks. It varies by product and is calculated separately.
