In short

What it calculates
Add or remove Colombia IVA at the rates in force.
Formula used
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 19 % rate:

Colombia IVA calculator

In Colombia the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Impuesto sobre las Ventas, sales tax), with a standard rate of 19%.

Colombia distinguishes three situations that are easy to confuse: taxed at 19% or 5%, exempt (0% with a right to a refund) and excluded (no tax and no right to deduct input tax). The 5% rate covers coffee, oils, some foods and certain vehicles.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Colombia are: standard 19 %, reduced 5 % and zero-rated 0 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 19 % rate:

IVA amount: $190
Final price: $1,190

The other way round, starting from $1,190 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.

Explanation

Taxed, exempt and excluded: three different things

This is the most common confusion in Colombian VAT and it hits the bottom line. Taxed means the sale carries 19% or 5%. Exempt means a 0% rate: no VAT is charged to the customer, but the seller keeps the right to deduct VAT on purchases and may claim a refund. Excluded means the transaction falls outside the tax: nothing is charged and nothing is deducted, so input VAT becomes a cost.

What falls under 5%

Coffee, edible oils, some agricultural products, certain electric vehicles and specific housing services. It is a closed list: anything not expressly named is taxed at 19%.

Registration and filing frequency

VAT-registered businesses file every two or four months depending on the previous year's income. Those below the statutory thresholds are not VAT-registered and do not charge it, which is common among independent professionals with moderate income.

Frequently asked questions

Which IVA rates apply in Colombia?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 19 %, reduced 5 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Colombia legislation; if in doubt, check with la Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales (DIAN).

How do I remove IVA from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

How often is VAT filed?

Every two or four months, depending on gross income in the previous tax year. DIAN publishes the calendar annually.

Who is not VAT-registered?

Individuals who stay below the thresholds for income, assets, bank deposits and number of premises set out in the rules.
