Chile IVA calculator
In Chile the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado, value added tax), with a standard rate of 19%.
Chile has one of the simplest structures in the Americas: a single 19% rate with no reduced rates, which removes any argument about which product falls where. There are also specific additional taxes on alcohol, sugary drinks and luxury goods.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Chile are: standard 19 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 19 % rate:
IVA amount: $190
Final price: $1,190
The other way round, starting from $1,190 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.
Explanation
A single rate, and that simplifies everything
Chile applies 19% to virtually everything, with no reduced rates by category. There is no need to work out whether a product counts as a staple or a luxury: the percentage is the same. That turns the calculation into a clean division by 1.19 when you want to strip the tax out of a final price.
Boleta and factura are not the same document
The boleta is issued to final consumers and gives no input tax credit. The factura is issued between registered taxpayers and does. If you buy for your business and receive a boleta, you have lost the chance to recover that tax. It is the most expensive and most common mistake.
An electronic invoicing pioneer
Chile has used electronic tax documents since the early 2000s, and paper issuance is now marginal. The SII validates each document and automatically cross-checks it against the monthly return, form 29.
Tax-inclusive prices
In retail, the law requires the final price to be displayed to the public. What you see on the label already includes the 19%.
Frequently asked questions
Which IVA rates apply in Chile?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 19 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Chile legislation; if in doubt, check with el Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII).
How do I remove IVA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Why is a boleta no use to my business?
Because it does not evidence an input tax credit. To recover the tax you need a factura showing your RUT and company details.
Does Chile have a reduced rate for food?
No. The 19% rate applies generally, with no reduced rates by product type. Specific exemptions exist, but not lower rates.
