In short

What it calculates
Add or remove Portugal IVA at the rates in force.
Formula used
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 23 % rate:

Portugal IVA calculator

In Portugal the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Value Added Tax), with a standard rate of 23%.

Mainland Portugal applies 23%, but Madeira and the Azores have their own lower rates as outermost regions. The 6% reduced rate covers basic foodstuffs, medicines and passenger transport.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Portugal are: standard 23 %, reduced 13 % and super-reduced 6 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 23 % rate:

IVA amount: €230
Final price: €1,230

The other way round, starting from €1,230 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.

Explanation

Madeira and the Azores have their own rates

The 23% figure applies to mainland Portugal. Madeira uses a 22% standard rate and the Azores 16%, with proportionally lower reduced rates, as outermost regions of the EU. If you invoice there, use the manual rate option.

The taxpayer-number habit

In Portugal you will routinely be asked whether you want the receipt issued with your NIF. It is not red tape: part of the VAT paid in restaurants, hairdressers, garages, vets and transport can later be deducted in the personal income tax return, within annual caps.

What falls under 6%

Basic food, medicines, books, newspapers, passenger transport, electricity and gas within certain consumption bands, and hotel accommodation. The 13% rate covers restaurant services, wine, mineral water and some intermediate food products.

Filing frequency

Monthly if the previous year's turnover exceeds the threshold, quarterly below it. Returns go through the Portal das Finanças along with the SAF-T invoicing file.

Frequently asked questions

Which IVA rates apply in Portugal?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 23 %, reduced 13 % and super-reduced 6 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Portugal legislation; if in doubt, check with la Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira.

How do I remove IVA from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

Which rate applies in Madeira and the Azores?

Both regions have lower rates than the mainland. If you invoice there, use the manual rate option with the applicable percentage.

Which rate applies in restaurants?

13% on meals and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic drinks are taxed at 23%, even served at the same table.

Can I deduct VAT on personal spending?

In the personal income tax return you can deduct part of the VAT paid in certain sectors if you asked for the receipt with your NIF, subject to annual caps.
