France TVA calculator

In France the indirect tax on consumption is TVA (Taxe sur la Valeur Ajoutée), with a standard rate of 20%.

France has four rates. The 5.5% rate covers food, books and energy; 10% applies to restaurants and renovation work; and 2.1% is reserved for reimbursable medicines and the press. Corsica and the overseas territories apply specific rates.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in France are: standard 20 %, reduced 10 %, reduced 2 5.5 % and super-reduced 2.1 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 20 % rate:

TVA amount: €200
Final price: €1,200

The other way round, starting from €1,200 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.

Explanation

Four rates and the reasoning

France keeps an unusually wide scale. The 20% rate is standard. The 10% rate covers restaurants, passenger transport, improvement works on homes over two years old and unprocessed agricultural produce. The 5.5% rate applies to food, books, school supplies, energy and equipment for people with disabilities. And 2.1% is reserved for medicines reimbursed by social security and for the press.

The restaurant detail

Eating in and taking away are taxed the same, at 10%, but alcoholic drinks always go at 20%, even served at the same table. It is the most common source of error in French hospitality.

Territories with their own rules

Corsica applies specific rates in several sectors, and the overseas departments have their own regime: Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion use reduced rates, while VAT is currently not applied in French Guiana or Mayotte.

Franchise en base

Professionals below certain turnover thresholds do not charge VAT and state the corresponding legal wording on their invoices. In exchange, they cannot deduct the VAT they pay.

Frequently asked questions

Which TVA rates apply in France?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 20 %, reduced 10 %, reduced 2 5.5 % and super-reduced 2.1 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by France legislation; if in doubt, check with la Direction générale des finances publiques (DGFiP).

How do I remove TVA from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

Which rate applies in restaurants?

10% for eating in and takeaway, except alcoholic drinks, which are taxed at 20%.

How often is French VAT filed?

Monthly or quarterly depending on the regime and the size of the business. The simplified regime files annually with instalments.

Which rate applies to home renovation?

10% for improvement works on homes over two years old, and 5.5% for qualifying energy efficiency work.
