In short

What it calculates
Add or remove Mexico IVA at the rates in force.
Formula used
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 16 % rate:

Mexico IVA calculator

In Mexico the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado, value added tax), with a standard rate of 16%.

Mexico applies 8% in the northern and southern border regions, a tax incentive designed to compete with prices across the border. The 0% rate covers unprepared food, patent medicines and books: it is not an exemption, because the seller can still credit the VAT paid.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Mexico are: standard 16 %, border zone 8 % and zero-rated 0 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 16 % rate:

IVA amount: $160
Final price: $1,160

The other way round, starting from $1,160 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.

Explanation

The border zone and why it exists

The 8% incentive applies in municipalities along the northern and southern borders. It was created so shops in cities such as Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez and Chetumal could compete with prices on the other side. Being located there is not enough: the taxpayer must be listed on the incentive register and meet the requirements, otherwise the 16% rate applies again.

Zero-rated and exempt are not the same

In Mexico the distinction has real accounting consequences. Zero-rated supplies — unprepared food, patent medicines, books, exports — mean the seller charges no VAT but can still credit the VAT paid on purchases and claim a refund. Exempt activities — medical services, education, residential housing — mean no VAT charged and no credit either: the input tax becomes a cost.

Withheld VAT

Some transactions oblige the buyer to withhold part of the VAT: professional services rendered by individuals, property leased from individuals, and road freight transport. The withheld amount is paid to the SAT and the supplier deducts it from their return.

Frequently asked questions

Which IVA rates apply in Mexico?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 16 %, border zone 8 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Mexico legislation; if in doubt, check with el Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT).

How do I remove IVA from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

When does the 8% border rate apply?

Only if the taxpayer is registered for the incentive and the transaction takes place in the listed municipalities. Otherwise the 16% rate applies.

When is Mexican VAT filed?

Monthly, by the 17th of the following month. It is a final return, not an advance payment.

What is creditable VAT?

The VAT paid on purchases and expenses needed for the business. It is deducted from the VAT charged to customers; any balance can be offset or refunded.

Do prepared foods carry 16%?

Yes. Unprocessed food is zero-rated, but food prepared for consumption on the premises is taxed at 16%.
