Spain IVA calculator
In Spain the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Value Added Tax), with a standard rate of 21%.
The 4% super-reduced rate is a Spanish peculiarity: it covers basic bread, milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables, books, newspapers and medicines for human use. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside Spanish VAT and apply their own taxes (IGIC and IPSI).
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Spain are: standard 21 %, reduced 10 % and super-reduced 4 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 21 % rate:
IVA amount: €210
Final price: €1,210
The other way round, starting from €1,210 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.
Explanation
Which rate applies to what
The 21% standard rate is the default: anything not expressly placed in another category is taxed at 21%. The 10% reduced rate covers food in general, water, passenger transport, hospitality, admission to events and newly built homes. The 4% super-reduced rate is reserved for essentials: plain bread, milk, eggs, fruit, vegetables, cheese, books, newspapers, medicines for human use and vehicles for people with reduced mobility.
When you have to charge it
If you invoice as a self-employed worker or a company in mainland Spain or the Balearics, you charge VAT unless your activity is exempt: healthcare, regulated education, insurance and some financial operations are. Invoices to customers in other EU countries holding a valid VAT number use the reverse charge and go out without VAT.
The most common mistake when breaking a price down
Subtracting 21% from the final price. If something costs €121 including VAT, the net is not 121 − 21% = €95.59 but 121 ÷ 1.21 = €100.
Frequently asked questions
Which IVA rates apply in Spain?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 21 %, reduced 10 % and super-reduced 4 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Spain legislation; if in doubt, check with la Agencia Tributaria (AEAT).
How do I remove IVA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Does Spanish VAT apply in the Canary Islands?
No. The Canaries use IGIC, with a different standard rate, and Ceuta and Melilla use IPSI. If you invoice there, this calculator is not the right one.
When is the VAT return filed?
Quarterly, in the first twenty days of April, July and October, and between 1 and 30 January for the fourth quarter. Large companies file monthly.
Is input VAT always recoverable?
No. Only on expenses linked to the business and backed by a full invoice in your name. Client entertainment and mixed-use vehicles have their own rules.
