Greece FPA calculator
In Greece the indirect tax on consumption is FPA (Φόρος Προστιθέμενης Αξίας, value added tax), with a standard rate of 24%.
In Greece the tax is written ΦΠΑ and pronounced “fi-pi-a”. Several Aegean islands apply rates reduced by 30% compared with the mainland, as compensation for their isolation. The 13% rate covers food and hospitality and 6% medicines, books and theatre tickets.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Greece are: standard 24 %, reduced 13 % and reduced 2 6 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 24 % rate:
FPA amount: €240
Final price: €1,240
The other way round, starting from €1,240 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.
Explanation
The Aegean islands have had their own rates
For years a group of Aegean islands applied rates reduced by 30% against the mainland, compensating for the extra cost of transport. The measure has been withdrawn and reinstated several times depending on the budget cycle, so check the current position before invoicing on an island.
6%, reserved for essentials
Medicines, vaccines, books, newspapers and theatre tickets. The 13% rate covers food, water, hotels, restaurant service and care services. Everything else is at 24%.
myDATA: accounting ledgers online
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue requires income and expenses to be transmitted electronically to the myDATA platform. Company accounts and the administration's records are cross-checked automatically, which has transformed Greek accounting practice.
Accommodation and the overnight levy
On top of the 13% on hotel stays, a per-night levy applies that is not part of the taxable base: it is invoiced separately and no VAT is charged on it.
Frequently asked questions
Which FPA rates apply in Greece?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 24 %, reduced 13 % and reduced 2 6 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Greece legislation; if in doubt, check with la Autoridad Independiente de Ingresos Públicos (AADE).
How do I remove FPA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
How do you say VAT in Greek?
ΦΠΑ, standing for Φόρος Προστιθέμενης Αξίας. It is pronounced “fee-pee-ah” and appears that way on every invoice.
Do Greek hotels charge 13%?
Yes on the room, plus a per-night accommodation levy invoiced separately and outside the taxable base.
