In short

What it calculates
Add or remove Bolivia IVA at the rates in force.
Formula used
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Example
A product priced Bs1,000 before tax, at the standard 13 % rate:

Bolivia IVA calculator

In Bolivia the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado, value added tax), with a standard rate of 13%.

Bolivia's 13% VAT is applied “inside” the price in normal accounting practice: the effective rate on the pre-tax price is around 14.94%. This calculator uses the standard calculation on the base; if you need the internal criterion, choose manual rate and enter 14.94.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Bolivia are: standard 13 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced Bs1,000 before tax, at the standard 13 % rate:

IVA amount: Bs130
Final price: Bs1,130

The other way round, starting from Bs1,130 tax included, the base is Bs1,000 again.

Explanation

The 13% is calculated from the inside

This is the Bolivian peculiarity to grasp before doing any arithmetic. Bolivian VAT applies to the selling price with the tax already included, not to the net base. So if you start from a tax-exclusive amount, the effective percentage you must add is not 13% but 14.94%.

A concrete example

On a final price of 100 bolivianos, the tax contained is 13. The base is 87. But if your starting point is 87 and you want to reach 100, you must add 13 on top of 87, which is 14.94%. This calculator applies the correct formula automatically.

Invoices reduce your income tax

In Bolivia people ask for an invoice out of habit and self-interest: employees can submit invoices for personal spending to reduce the Complementary Regime to VAT withheld from their salary. That is why you are asked at every purchase whether you want an invoice.

Online invoicing

The National Tax Service has migrated issuance to online systems, validating each document and issuing verifiable control codes.

Frequently asked questions

Which IVA rates apply in Bolivia?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 13 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Bolivia legislation; if in doubt, check with el Servicio de Impuestos Nacionales (SIN).

How do I remove IVA from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

Why is the effective percentage 14.94%?

Because Bolivian tax is calculated from the inside. The 13% applies to the tax-inclusive price, which is equivalent to 14.94% on the net base.

Why do employees keep invoices?

To offset them against the Complementary Regime to VAT withheld from their salary. Submitting invoices reduces that withholding.
