Bulgaria DDS calculator

In Bulgaria the indirect tax on consumption is DDS (данък върху добавената стойност, value added tax), with a standard rate of 20%.

Bulgaria keeps a simple system: 20% standard and a 9% rate applied mainly to tourist accommodation, books and baby food. It is among the lowest standard rates in eastern EU member states.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Bulgaria are: standard 20 % and reduced 9 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced лв1,000 before tax, at the standard 20 % rate:

DDS amount: лв200
Final price: лв1,200

The other way round, starting from лв1,200 tax included, the base is лв1,000 again.

Explanation

A simple two-rate system

Bulgaria keeps one of the simplest schemes in the European Union: 20% standard and 9% for hotel accommodation, books and baby food. There is no super-reduced rate and no domestic zero rate, which makes the Bulgarian invoice straightforward to compute.

The lev and the arrival of the euro

Prices are quoted in leva, symbol лв. Bulgaria has worked for years towards joining the euro area, and during the changeover period it is common to see prices in both currencies. The tax works the same either way: the rate applies to the base, not to the currency.

Registration threshold

Businesses below an annual turnover figure are not required to register for the tax, though they may do so voluntarily if deducting input tax suits them.

Monthly filing

Unlike countries that allow quarterly or half-yearly returns, Bulgaria requires monthly filing as a general rule, submitted to the National Revenue Agency.

Frequently asked questions

Which DDS rates apply in Bulgaria?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 20 % and reduced 9 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Bulgaria legislation; if in doubt, check with la Национална агенция за приходите (NAP).

How do I remove DDS from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

How do you say VAT in Bulgarian?

ДДС, standing for данък върху добавената стойност. It appears that way on invoices and receipts.

What falls under 9%?

Mainly hotel accommodation, books and certain baby foods. Everything else is taxed at 20%.
