Ecuador IVA calculator
In Ecuador the indirect tax on consumption is IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado, value added tax), with a standard rate of 15%.
Ecuador raised its standard rate from 12% to 15% in 2024, so check the date on any older invoice before redoing a calculation. As the country uses the US dollar, amounts carry no currency conversion.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Ecuador are: standard 15 %, reduced 5 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced $1,000 before tax, at the standard 15 % rate:
IVA amount: $150
Final price: $1,150
The other way round, starting from $1,150 tax included, the base is $1,000 again.
Explanation
The rate went from 12% to 15% in 2024
Ecuador kept 12% for many years, then raised it to 15% in 2024 to fund internal security. It is a recent and very visible change: any invoice predating the reform carries 12%, and applying 15% to an older document gives the wrong answer.
A dollarised economy
Ecuador has used the US dollar as its official currency since 2000. That removes exchange rate risk from the calculation, but changes nothing in the mechanics of the tax: the percentage applies to the base as usual.
The 0% band and who benefits
Unprocessed agricultural food, medicines, books and exports are taxed at 0%. It is not an exemption: the seller keeps the right to a tax credit.
Refunds for older people and people with disabilities
Ecuador refunds tax paid on essential goods and services to senior citizens and people with disabilities, subject to monthly caps. Claims go through the SRI.
Frequently asked questions
Which IVA rates apply in Ecuador?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 15 %, reduced 5 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Ecuador legislation; if in doubt, check with el Servicio de Rentas Internas (SRI).
How do I remove IVA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Since when does 15% apply?
Since the 2024 reform. Before that, Ecuador’s standard rate was 12%, in force for many years.
Do senior citizens get VAT back?
Yes. There is a refund scheme for senior citizens and people with disabilities, subject to monthly limits and processed through the SRI.
