Poland VAT calculator
In Poland the indirect tax on consumption is VAT (podatek od towarów i usług), with a standard rate of 23%.
Poland's 5% rate covers staple foods, books and specialist press; 8% applies to medicines, passenger transport, hospitality and social housing works. Poland also operates a mandatory split payment system on certain business-to-business transactions.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Poland are: standard 23 %, reduced 8 %, reduced 2 5 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced zł1,000 before tax, at the standard 23 % rate:
VAT amount: zł230
Final price: zł1,230
The other way round, starting from zł1,230 tax included, the base is zł1,000 again.
Explanation
Split payment is mandatory in many cases
Poland operates the mechanizm podzielonej płatności: in business-to-business transactions above a certain amount and in specific sectors, the buyer pays the net amount to the supplier and the tax into a restricted bank account usable only for fiscal purposes. It is not optional, and skipping it carries penalties.
The white list of bank accounts
The biała lista publishes the accounts declared by each taxpayer. Paying an invoice above a certain amount into an account not on the list can cost you the right to deduct the expense. Check it before paying a Polish supplier.
JPK_V7 instead of a classic return
The traditional return was replaced by a structured file combining the invoice ledger and the settlement. In most cases it is filed monthly.
What falls under 5% and 8%
The 5% rate covers basic food, books and specialist publications. The 8% rate covers medicines, passenger transport, hospitality, social housing construction and some services.
Frequently asked questions
Which VAT rates apply in Poland?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 23 %, reduced 8 %, reduced 2 5 % and zero-rated 0 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Poland legislation; if in doubt, check with la Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa.
How do I remove VAT from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
What is the biała lista?
The public register of Polish taxpayers’ bank accounts. Paying outside those accounts can cost you the deduction for the expense.
Does split payment apply to consumers?
No. It is a business-to-business mechanism, applying to certain goods and services above a set invoice value.
