Saudi Arabia VAT calculator
In Saudi Arabia the indirect tax on consumption is VAT (ضريبة القيمة المضافة, Value Added Tax), with a standard rate of 15%.
Saudi Arabia tripled its VAT from 5% to 15% in July 2020, one of the sharpest increases recorded anywhere. Electronic invoicing is mandatory and integrated with the tax administration in real time.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Saudi Arabia are: standard 15 % and zero-rated 0 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced SAR1,000 before tax, at the standard 15 % rate:
VAT amount: SAR150
Final price: SAR1,150
The other way round, starting from SAR1,150 tax included, the base is SAR1,000 again.
Explanation
The rate tripled in 2020
Saudi Arabia introduced the tax in January 2018 at 5%, in line with its Gulf neighbours. In July 2020 it raised it to 15%, tripling it in one move to offset falling oil revenue and the cost of the pandemic. It is one of the sharpest rate changes any country has seen in recent decades, and explains why Saudi invoices before and after that date look like they come from different tax systems.
Fatoora: mandatory electronic invoicing
ZATCA rolled out the Fatoora system in two phases: first structured electronic issuance, then real-time integration with the authority's platform, with a mandatory QR code on the simplified receipt. The rollout has proceeded in waves by turnover.
Zero rate and exemptions
Zero-rated: exports, international transport and certain healthcare and medicine supplies. Exempt: some financial services and residential property leasing.
Zakat and consumption tax
They should not be confused: zakat is a separate obligation calculated on the company's net asset base, and the same authority, ZATCA, administers both.

How do I remove VAT from a final price?
