Denmark moms calculator

In Denmark the indirect tax on consumption is moms (merværdiafgift, value added tax), with a standard rate of 25%.

Denmark is Europe's most radical case: a single 25% rate, with no reduced rates for food, books or medicines. Only printed newspapers are zero-rated. That uniformity greatly simplifies accounting, at the cost of taxing essentials and luxuries alike.

This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.

How it works

Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Denmark are: standard 25 %.

If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.

Formula

Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

Tax = total − net

Worked example

A product priced kr1,000 before tax, at the standard 25 % rate:

moms amount: kr250
Final price: kr1,250

The other way round, starting from kr1,250 tax included, the base is kr1,000 again.

Explanation

A single rate, with no reduced exceptions

Denmark is the cleanest case in Europe: a single 25% rate on virtually everything. There is no reduced rate for food, medicines or restaurant meals. That makes the Danish invoice one of the simplest on the continent to work out.

The one oddity: newspapers

Newspapers are zero-rated rather than exempt, which lets publishers keep deducting the tax on their purchases. It is the historical exception that proves the rule.

Why 25% is accepted

Denmark funds a broad welfare state with this tax, and the absence of reduced rates is defended on efficiency grounds: fewer categories mean fewer classification disputes and less fraud. Redistribution happens through spending, not through the tax.

Filing frequency by turnover

Large businesses file monthly, medium-sized ones quarterly and small ones every six months. Everything goes through the Skattestyrelsen portal.

Frequently asked questions

Which moms rates apply in Denmark?

The rates built into the calculator are: standard 25 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Denmark legislation; if in doubt, check with la Skattestyrelsen.

How do I remove moms from a final price?

Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.

Is there really no reduced rate on food?

There is not. Bread, milk and vegetables are taxed at 25%, the same as a television. It is a Danish peculiarity within the European Union.

What is moms in Denmark?

The same word as in Sweden and Norway: moms is the everyday term for value added tax across the Nordic countries.
