Norway MVA calculator
In Norway the indirect tax on consumption is MVA (merverdiavgift, value added tax), with a standard rate of 25%.
Norway is outside the European Union, so purchases from the EU go through customs. Its 15% rate applies to food and 12% to passenger transport, accommodation, cinema and museum admissions.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Norway are: standard 25 %, reduced 15 % and reduced 2 12 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced kr1,000 before tax, at the standard 25 % rate:
MVA amount: kr250
Final price: kr1,250
The other way round, starting from kr1,250 tax included, the base is kr1,000 again.
Explanation
Outside the Union, inside the European Economic Area
Norway is not in the EU, so purchases from European countries clear customs. Its tax, the merverdiavgift, works on the same mechanics but with its own rates and its own administration, the Skatteetaten.
Three clearly separated rates
25% standard, 15% for food and 12% for passenger transport, accommodation, cinema, museums and sports tickets. The food rate is among the more generous in Europe in relative terms, given how high the standard rate is.
VOEC for foreign shops
Online shops outside Norway selling low-value goods to Norwegian consumers register under the VOEC scheme and charge the tax at checkout, instead of leaving the recipient to pay it at customs.
Registration threshold
Anyone below a set annual sales volume is not required to register or charge the tax, which eases occasional trading.
Frequently asked questions
Which MVA rates apply in Norway?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 25 %, reduced 15 % and reduced 2 12 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Norway legislation; if in doubt, check with la Skatteetaten.
How do I remove MVA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Does Norway apply EU VAT?
No. It applies its own merverdiavgift, with the same charge-and-deduct mechanics but national rates and rules.
What is the VOEC scheme?
A simplified registration for foreign sellers of low-value goods, letting them charge Norwegian tax at the point of sale.
