Finland ALV calculator
In Finland the indirect tax on consumption is ALV (arvonlisävero, value added tax), with a standard rate of 25.5%.
Finland raised its standard rate from 24% to 25.5% in September 2024, giving it the highest in the European Union alongside Hungary. The 14% rate covers food and restaurants, and 10% books, medicines, transport and accommodation.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Finland are: standard 25.5 %, reduced 14 % and reduced 2 10 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced €1,000 before tax, at the standard 25.5 % rate:
ALV amount: €255
Final price: €1,255
The other way round, starting from €1,255 tax included, the base is €1,000 again.
Explanation
A recent and unusually precise increase
The 25.5% rate took effect on 1 September 2024, up from 24%. That extra half point makes it one of the highest standard rates in the European Union, behind only Hungary. Invoices dated before then use 24%.
Reduced categories reshuffled
The 14% rate covers food and restaurant service, and the 10% rate has historically grouped newspapers, passenger transport, accommodation, medicines and cultural and sporting services. Finland has reorganised what belongs in each of these bands several times in recent years, so check the specific item with Vero before invoicing.
Alcohol and tobacco, separately
On top of value added tax, Finland levies high excise duties on alcohol, tobacco and sugary drinks. The final price includes both, and the excise duty forms part of the base on which VAT is calculated.
Electronic filing in OmaVero
Everything is filed through the Tax Administration's OmaVero service, monthly, quarterly or annually depending on turnover.
Frequently asked questions
Which ALV rates apply in Finland?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 25.5 %, reduced 14 % and reduced 2 10 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Finland legislation; if in doubt, check with la Verohallinto.
How do I remove ALV from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Since when does 25.5% apply?
Since 1 September 2024. Before that date the Finnish standard rate was 24%.
Why is the rate not a round number?
The increase was calibrated to raise a specific amount without reaching 26%, and landed on 25.5%. It is the only EU standard rate with a decimal.
