Sweden moms calculator
In Sweden the indirect tax on consumption is moms (mervärdesskatt, value added tax), with a standard rate of 25%.
Sweden sits alongside Denmark, Norway, Croatia and Hungary among Europe's highest standard rates. The 12% rate covers food, restaurants and accommodation, while 6% is reserved for books, the press, passenger transport and cultural and sporting admissions.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Sweden are: standard 25 %, reduced 12 % and reduced 2 6 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced kr1,000 before tax, at the standard 25 % rate:
moms amount: kr250
Final price: kr1,250
The other way round, starting from kr1,250 tax included, the base is kr1,000 again.
Explanation
Moms: the word you will see everywhere
Mervärdesskatt is the legal name, but nobody uses it. On a till display, on a receipt or in conversation it is always moms. Sweden was among the first countries to reach 25%, and has stayed there for decades.
The three rates and their logic
25% is the standard rate. 12% covers food, restaurant service, hotels and some repairs. 6% is reserved for books, newspapers, passenger transport, concerts, cinema and sporting event tickets. Culture and mobility are the priorities of the low rate.
F-skatt: the registration you are asked for before invoicing
A Swedish self-employed worker needs F-skatt approval before issuing invoices. Clients check it, because it determines who withholds tax. It is so routine that service adverts mention it directly.
Filing through Skatteverket
Monthly, quarterly or annually depending on turnover, always through the Swedish Tax Agency portal using BankID electronic identification.
Frequently asked questions
Which moms rates apply in Sweden?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 25 %, reduced 12 % and reduced 2 6 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Sweden legislation; if in doubt, check with la Skatteverket.
How do I remove moms from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
