Morocco TVA calculator
In Morocco the indirect tax on consumption is TVA (taxe sur la valeur ajoutée), with a standard rate of 20%.
Morocco keeps four rates. The 7% rate covers water, low-consumption electricity and medicines; 10% restaurants, hotels and banking operations; and 14% transport and butter. The country is reforming its VAT to gradually reduce the number of rates.
This calculator works both ways: it adds the tax to a price without it and also breaks it out of a final price.
How it works
Enter the amount, choose whether to add or remove the tax and pick the rate. The rates available in Morocco are: standard 20 %, reduced 14 %, reduced 2 10 % and super-reduced 7 %.
If you need a rate other than those listed, choose “other rate” and type it in.
Formula
Add: total = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Remove: net = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
Tax = total − net
Worked example
A product priced DH1,000 before tax, at the standard 20 % rate:
TVA amount: DH200
Final price: DH1,200
The other way round, starting from DH1,200 tax included, the base is DH1,000 again.
Explanation
A four-rate system in the middle of reform
Morocco applies rates of 20%, 14%, 10% and 7%, but is midway through a reform aimed at simplifying the scale and converging on fewer rates. Changes come through annual finance laws and hit different categories each year, so checking with the Directorate General of Taxes before invoicing is not textbook advice: it is necessary.
What each rate covers today
20% is the standard rate. 14% applies to passenger transport and some products such as butter. 10% covers hospitality, restaurants, banking operations and certain foods. 7% is reserved for water, domestic electricity, medicines and school supplies.
Exports and the suspensive regime
Exports are zero-rated, and exporters can operate under a suspensive regime allowing them to purchase without bearing the tax, avoiding tying up cash while waiting for refunds.
Monthly or quarterly filing
Frequency depends on the previous year's turnover. Above a certain threshold, filing is monthly.
Frequently asked questions
Which TVA rates apply in Morocco?
The rates built into the calculator are: standard 20 %, reduced 14 %, reduced 2 10 % and super-reduced 7 %. Which one applies to a given product or service is set by Morocco legislation; if in doubt, check with la Direction Générale des Impôts.
How do I remove TVA from a final price?
Choose the option to remove the tax and the calculator divides the final price by one plus the rate. Subtracting the percentage from the final price gives the wrong answer.
Why should I verify the Moroccan rate?
Because the country is reforming its rate scale in annual stages. A category taxed at one rate today may change in the next finance law.
What falls under 7%?
Water, domestic electricity, medicines and school supplies, among other essential goods.
